Garching, Germany, October 16, 2024 – LEDVANCE, a global leader in lighting solutions, lights up BayArena: The Leverkusen-based football stadium of Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen wanted to install a new lighting concept, so the illumination system used during football matches adheres to UEFA Elite Level A standards, ensuring the action remains crystal clear for both thousands of fans in the stadium and millions watching the live broadcast worldwide.
The BayArena is the home of the reigning German Bundesliga champions and DFB-Cup winners Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and the new floodlight system should be equally as good. With upcoming international matches, the club took action to revamp the stadium lighting system to not only meet, but to exceed the latest UEFA lighting requirements. With LEDVANCE, Bayer 04 Leverkusen developed a modern, state-of-the-art LED-based lighting concept for the stadium.
By replacing the existing luminaires with FL Arena floodlights, the stadium’s floodlight system now allows for greater functionality and therefore more options for color changes, light levels and show effects. FL Arena floodlights leverage cutting-edge LED technology, delivering superior illumination quality and light distribution while reducing energy consumption, thus significantly reducing BayArena’s environmental footprint. At the same time, maintenance demands are also significantly reduced, enhancing both efficiency and performance.
Thomas Fobbe, Territory Head DACH, LEDVANCE: “We are excited to continue our strategic partnership with Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The BayArena project is a milestone setting new standards in lighting quality and sustainability in sports lighting.” In 2023, LEDVANCE already developed a modern lighting concept for the Ulrich Haberland Stadium, the venue of the Bayer 04 Leverkusen women’s Bundesliga team.
Felix Duden, Managing Director TecArena-Plus GmbH: “The renewal of the floodlight system at BayArena allows us to perform at the highest level as far as lighting technology is concerned. With LEDVANCE as our sustainability partner for lighting, we have a true team player in the line-up to further advance our sustainability goals. We have been investing in more sustainable systems and have been emphasizing responsible use of resources for several years. All our club's buildings will be sustainably equipped with ecological LED technology within the next few years.”
The BayArena’s new floodlight system is located on several rings installed under the roof, with the outer ring only being accessible by climbers. Each FL Arena floodlight therefore had to be pulled up and fixed in its new position separately.
In addition to the floodlights, cables for the power supply and DMX lines for the lighting control had to be installed as well. Indirect illumination will be provided by each of the 36 roof segments by four RGB and one red-only FL Arena floodlights, ensuring atmospheric lighting throughout the football season.
BayArena’s new floodlight system is worthy of the Champions League contender: 324 lights are installed on the inner rings for floodlighting. The 60 Quattro luminaires installed for stand lighting feature both white and RGB chips, adding vibrant colors to enhance spectators' visual experience and enjoyment. Each floodlight is individually controllable, allowing for a wide range of lighting scenarios at the touch of a button. This cutting-edge system not only meets but exceeds the strictest UEFA requirements, ensuring the stadium is fully prepared for the upcoming matches.
